Helping horses achieve comfort, function and performance through a whole-horse approach.

covering the south east

About

My name is Thea Maxfield

I'm a professional saddle fitter providing fitting services for horses and rider across the South East

Alongside occasional ridden lessons, groundwork and long reining, and support with rehabilitation and behavioural concerns.

My work is based around functional anatomy and biomechanics, and practical assessment of the horse, rider and saddle in front of me.

With experience in saddle fitting and equine performance, I support riders dealing with a wide range of fitting and comfort-related issues, from routine checks through to more complex fitting challenges.

My aim is to provide clear, honest assessments and practical solutions that prioritize the horse's wellbeing and long-term soundness.

If you are unsure whether your saddle is suitable, a professional assessment can provide clarity and peace of mind.

Certificates include remedial saddle fitting, equine behaviour, rehabilitation, anatomy and palpation, taping and coaching.

Guidance

Helping riders make informed saddle decisions

common problems I help with

Many riders contact me because they are noticing:

  • saddle slipping or moving during work

  • uneven or restricted movement

  • loss of performance

  • behavioural changes under saddle

  • difficulty finding a suitable saddle

  • changes in shape due to training, age, or condition

  • pain during or after riding

If any of these sound familiar, a professional assessment can help clarify the cause.

what happens at a saddle fitting

A typical appointment includes:

  • assessment of the horse in movement and at rest

  • review of current saddle

  • evaluation of rider position and balance

  • testing and adjustment where approprate

  • discussion of findings and next steps

Where required, guidance is given on correction, adjustment, or replacement options.

Appointments can be at your yard, venues I regularly work at, or at my base in Bicester, Oxfordshire.

Appointments are usually 90 minutes but can be longer as needed.

I will never rush you or your horse and take the time to ensure we have covered everything, that I have answered all your questions, that you understand what the issue is, what remedies I have performed, and that you are satisfied.

I can work with your existing saddle(s), bring saddles or help you source saddles to have on the day.

I hold my own new and second hand stock from everyday leisure to elite performance saddles. I also have demos I can bring along and leave with you for a trial period.

If your horse is going through a period of rehabilitation, I can hire you a saddle to allow for your horse to make the necessary improvements needed, and I am happy to work with your horse's support team to ensure the very best for your horse.
